MENJANGAN ISLAND & PEMUTERAN REEF

BALI MENJANGAN (Deer) ISLAND & PEMUTERAN REEF is on the northwest corner of Bali, and as part of the West Bali National Park, falls under jurisdicion of the Bali Park Service.

From first becoming renowned for its diving around 1978 MenjanganIsland has maintained a well earnd reputation as being a world class dive location. Two events, a crown of thorn starfish invasion in 1997, and coral bleaching due to El Nino in 1998, decreased the overall appeal of this site, at least now is coming back to life thanks to Marine parks Enforcements .

Menjangan Island walls can be dived from the top in less than 10 meters of water down to depths exceeding 40 meters. Expect to see gorgonians, soft and hard corals, and lots of small to medium size creatures. I saw my first and only comet fish here. Crown trigger fish can are also seen here on a regular basis. Big ocean fish that like strong flowing, cold waters are not common here as the island is protected from such events.

Although the best diving season in Menjangan island is from about April to November, you can dive here most anytime of the year, choosing sites on the north or south of the island depending on the direction of the wind.

The visibility at Menjangan Island can at times be amazing, probably the best in Bali, especially in October and November with horizontal visibility often exceeding 50 meters.

Current here is very rare, even 1 knot of current is unusual around the island.
The most recommended dive sites on the island are

  • the Anker Wreck (40+ meters),

  • Eel Garden

  • Pos II.

Pemuteran Reef
Pemuteran is 45 min along the north coast from drive from Lovina, Pemuteran is a small resort town mostly located on the beaches. Scuba diving here is some of the best I have seen coral-covered Bommies that go from the sandy ocean floor, at around 40meters, up to about 3 meters from the surface. The top coral cover is a mixture of hard, soft and fire corals with some sea fans and sponges deeper. Some mild currents and visibility is usually very good, but varies quite a bit due to shallowness, easy access and good conditions
Due to the close proximity of the Dive Resorts, you can easily night dive at Pemuteran - not only on these coral bommies but also on their  House Reef  mostly just off the beach.

There is also a turtle sanctuary located at Pemuteran and one of my dive buddies saw a dugong (from far) while snorkeling.

The three reefs, Pura Tembok, Close Encounter and Napoleon Reef are all located close to the resorts in Pemuteran, no more than a boat trip of about 15 minutes away. The small reefs are covered with soft corals, gorgonians and sponges as well as many fishes (sting rays, shrimp fish, scorpion fish, lionfish, ghost pipe fish, batfish, groupers and even sometimes mantas). Nice & spectacular.

Pemuteran house reef: A special experience here are the colorful Mandarin dragonets that can be seen in the late afternoon. This is the time they come out from theeir hiding places to forage. Sometimes shortly before night falls they rise up and do a mating dace together. Night dives are around the house reef straight from the beach.
